Identity and Beyond
My work presents the body in an alternate reality in which I explore the meaning of identity and belonging through the use of surface pattern on the human form. Originally I started exploring the cultural, personal and social meanings of tattooing, making connections with adorning the body, this lead me to explore the figure amongst pattern.
Initially my work descended from the idea of tattoo art and the meaning of identity within African tribes, and then developed to focus on the commercial subcultures within our society, such as scarification, body piercing and suspension. All of these areas of interest posed such questions as what is identity? What defines our society? Is our identity reflected by our beliefs, or does scarification, tattooing or piercing define our individual identity? Is our identity purely based on our physical appearance? Or has the idea of identity changed throughout time in contrast to today's cultural society? And finally is our culture a reflection of our identity? I found this subject captivating and wanted to explore these questions using the body, our 'outer shell', as a starting point.
I use the body as a canvas, in contrast to the idea of tattoo as something decorative on the skin. Eventually the whole body becomes immersed in pattern, which envelops the figure making it indistinguishable from its surroundings. All of these ideas are expressed through a variety of media from sculpture and installation to video and photography.
